THE PUSH FOR THE PETE
By Seamus McDonough
The Rebels from three! Bang! The Rebels are being led by Seniors Hayden Merchant and Ian March. Recently Merchant has said he committed to Spire Academy to play basketball. March is also a two sport athlete playing both basketball and football.
Senior Merchant said, “Our goal is to get back to where we were last year and get better in late game situations so we can make a run to play at the WPIAL Championship.”
The Rebels lost their first section game to Serra Catholic Eagles in the first game of the season 72-71. Ever since that loss, the Rebels have been on a streak in their section taking wins from the South Park Eagles and Steel Valley Ironmens.
Senior March explained, “Serra was a wake up call for us knowing that we can’t play teams with the mentality that it’s a guaranteed win. I think the Serra loss is what our team needed to know that every game isn’t a guaranteed win and that we have to play any game like we're the underdogs.”
When talking to both Merchant and March, they both said that they have a strong chance at winning the section to get a top spot in the playoffs. With March being the leading rebounder on the team, he mentions that his fellow teammates need a lot of grit and feels as if he brings that to them every game.
When talking to the players, I asked how Coach Walsh leads this team. The leading factor players bring up the most is finishing games, in which there are too many games where the final score is way too close to what it should be.
