PHYSICS AT KENNYWOOD DAY

By Jaedyn Zilch

Have you ever wanted to go to Kennywood with your school, especially on a school day? On Friday, May 10, 2024, Seton LaSalle held a field trip, Physics at Kennywood Day, that allowed the Physics students to go enjoy some rides, while also learning about Physics.
Mr. Reece Norman assigned his Physics classes to create a short video (30-60 seconds) on their smartphones about an attraction of their choice at the park, while explaining some of the physics behind it.
Junior Michaela Hruby said, “This trip gave me a better perception on how physics is incorporated into things around us like roller coasters and gave me a visual representation that I could understand better than just a book would have provided.”
The Modern Media and Broadcast Journalism classes also had the opportunity to join the field trip. The Modern Media students took some photographs of our school at Kennywood and even wrote a news article about it, like this one. The purpose of these classes attending the trip with the Physics class was to generate content to publicize SLS and even attract more students to our school.
Many students had some positive feedback about the field trip and said how much fun they had there.
Junior Diamond Dibble said, “My favorite part of the trip was being able to spend extra time with my friends. I would absolutely go on this trip again if I had the opportunity. This trip was something I did not want to miss because I haven’t been to Kennywood in a while. Also just being with my friends outside of school was also fun.”
Junior Regis Manion said, “My favorite part was walking around with my friends and going to different places to check out. I would definitely go on the field trip again because it’s a good time to go out and try different rides if you haven’t been on one.”
The assignment that was assigned by Mr. Norman to his Physics class was  to film a short video on your phone (30-60 sec) of an attraction of your choice at the park while you explain some of the physics behind it. Junior Michaela Hruby said, “This trip gave me a better perception on how physics is incorporated into things around us like roller coasters and gave me a visual representation that I could understand better than just a book would have provided.”
This is the third year that Mr. Norman took his Physics classes to Kennywood, but he might not do that again next year. Mr. Norman explained, “I'll certainly try to organize a field trip, but I have an alternative idea I might try instead … bit of a toss-up.”
Junior Brady Walsh disagreed, “I do think Mr. Norman should take his physics class to Kennywood next year because it was a lot of fun to be at Kennywood with your friends and we also learned about Physics while we were there too.”
