SADD BUTTERFLY PROJECT

By Margaret Hirosky

“I do it because I feel that it is impactful for there to be a group like this, especially in a high school. “, Says Mrs. DiPietro-Guthoerl.

SADD (Students Against Destructive Decisions), took part in Butterfly Project Day.  The Butterfly Project is for those who self-cut. This is a national day that is celebrated around the world.

SADD has participated in this event since 2007. People, especially students, harm themselves in response to stress and or used as a coping mechanism. According to the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, one in five females and one in seven males harm themselves each year.

To deter from cutting, students  draw a butterfly on wherever part of themselves that they would harm. If the butterfly fades without cutting, then it has been set free.

“This is a powerful movement that is very moving and encouraging to keep going,” said a student.

Mrs. DiPietro-Guthoerl, who is called “Mrs. D” by her students, supplied students with temporary butterfly tattoos for the students. “I do it because I feel that it is impactful for there to be a group like this, especially in a highschool,” said Mrs. DiPietro-Guthoerl. Mrs. D. has been sponsoring this group for over ten years.
